Need to recover a file deleted by accident? Or perhaps a zip archive is giving you the dreaded “archive is corrupted” error?
Here are two free must-have data recovery programs for your Windows computer.
Recuva by Piriform Software is a free program that recovers files deleted from your Windows computer, Recycle Bin, digital camera card, or MP3 player.
Whether you have accidentally deleted a file or had some virus do it for you, Recuva will help you find it. The program is stand-alone, so it can be run from a flash or external drive. It is also worth using if you are trying to recover overwritten or damaged data on an otherwise healthy hard drive. Did I mention the price – it’s free (donations welcome though).
It works on both FAT and NTFS file systems, so you can undelete files on virtually any Windows PC ever made, and it has an easy to use “wizard” that will walk you through the steps to recovery.
Founded in 2003, DiskInternals is famous for it’s wide range of high-quality disk and data recovery products. Unfortunately, their industry quality software is too expensive for the average user. I was very pleased when looking to fix a corrupted .zip archive to find DiskInternals ZIP Repair for free.
So if your .zip archive is not unzipping, use ZIP Repair to scan the file. The easy to use wizard makes recovery painless.
After you locate an archive that needs repairing, the program will scan for damage. Then the recovery engine will extract and move all the intact files to a new archive. The only thing expected from you is to name the new archive or specify the location of the existing one. ZIP Repair works on any Windows PC, can recover .zip archive sof any size, and is able to save to any disks visible to the host operating system (including network) .
